      THE RESEARCH

      The Scientific Research

Forestami was launched in 2019 as the result of a research project by the Politecnico di Milano and a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Municipality of Milan, the Metropolitan City of Milan, Parco Nord Milano, and Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. The protocol was later endorsed by the Regione Lombardia, ERSAF, and the Fondazione di Comunità Milano.

Each institution immediately recognized the need to build a strategic vision for the role of green infrastructure in the Milan metropolitan area—aiming to bring about physical, environmental, and cultural change in our cities, and to reimagine nature as a structural part of urban environments.

Under the scientific direction of Maria Chiara Pastore, the Politecnico di Milano envisioned and laid the groundwork for this transformation by developing a strategic vision for urban greenery in the metropolitan area, starting with the mapping and enhancement of existing green systems.

      Research activities and phases

Analysis and assessment of the current state of green areas and estimation of tree canopy cover—i.e., the percentage of land surface covered by tree crowns across the entire territory—calculated at 16%

      Identification of planting potential

      Selection of pilot projects

Definition of indicators to assess the project’s impact on the environmental system

Stakeholder analysis at national and international level

Study of leading urban forestry practices

Establishment of governance and communication strategy

Mapping the project’s development across the metropolitan area to assess progress toward set targets and the evolution of natural capital

      Start of planting operations

Research on the effects of urban forestry on health and overall well-being

Public engagement and dissemination of research and project outcomes

Rollout of the project across the metropolitan area

      Tree planting and monitoring operations

Development of a platform to collect available data
